Familia Gladiatoria Carnuntina

With the discovery of the Gladiator School (ludus) in 2011 near the Civilian City's Amphitheatre, Carnuntum took the opportunity to highlight the life of the combatants in the arena in all locations of the Roman city. In 2015 scale models of the military city's Amphitheatre and of the Gladiator School were added (as well as Carnuntum's own gladiator troop) to the attractions of a multimedia-exhibition in the small museum at the military city's Amphitheatre, the Gladiator School's reconstructed training arena and decorations in the Roman city quarter with painted announcements of coming events, scratched drawings (graffiti) as well as a gladiator room.

Since 2004, gladiator games have taken place in the Military City's Amphitheatre in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg. So that ancient fighting techniques could be better studied and to provide Carnuntum with its own group of gladiators, the Familia Gladiatoria Carnuntina was founded. The individual members are either re-enactors who have proved their worth over many years, Carnuntum cultural mediators, teachers of history or hobby historians. After intensive preparations the troop premiered in May 2015 in the Gladiator School's training arena and has become a vital part of Carnuntum's festivities. But where do the gladiators originate from? Let them now speak for themselves.

Born in Hispania, I worked as a blacksmith. After getting being caught red-handed at a brawl in a tavern, a soldier was accidentally during my arrest. I was sold off to the ludus and landed up in Pannonia where the local lanista chose me for his school.
