On the initiative of the association "Gesellschaft der Freunde Carnuntums" founded in 1885, the architects Friedrich Ohmann and August Kirstein were given the task of planning an museum for the sinds from Carnuntum and its surroundings. The building was erected in the architectural style of a Roman villa. The Museum Carnuntinum was officially opened in 1904 by Emperor Francis Joseph in person. Today, it is the treasure house of the Roman City Carnuntum and possesses the most important collection of Roman Carnuntum. Temporary exhibitions show some of the more than 2 mio. valuable objects from over 400 years of Romans in the Carnuntum area.
