The moment has finally come! The gladiators enter the arena, the grand spectacle can begin at last. And grand is exactly what this spectacle is! The fights at the Roman Festival are not prearranged performances. They are genuine confrontations with unknown outcomes. They are fought with wooden weapons, a practice for which there is solid historical evidence. That is because the real gladiators fought in the morning (for training purposes) in front of a crowd with wooden weapons. Any fighting that followed in the afternoon was with sharp weapons. We do not stage the latter type of fighting. Although gladiator fights were only rarely struggles for life and death, they were subject to strict rules. However, a fighter was rarely mortally wounded. Our tip: This is a spectacle you will not want to miss.
