Civilian City's Amphitheatre

Carnuntum's larger amphitheatre is only a 10 minute walk away from the Roman City Quarter.

The civilian city’s Amphitheatre was situated outside the ancient city walls and was erected towards the end of the 2nd century AD. The arena was surrounded on both sides of the gates by spectator stands 25 metres wide, which could seat 13,000 visitors. Stairs and stair wells led to the higher rows of seats. Outside the southern passage was a hexagonal basin dating from the 4th century AD and made of re-used building blocks. This could have been a baptismal font, but this has not been proven. By this point in time the Amphitheatre probably no longer served its original purpose.
